Darts has been played in The Netherlands ever since World War II, when British soldiers brought the game with them. For a long time darts was only played in the British Legion Clubs and the sailor-societies. In the early seventies inhabitants of the city of Den Haag, capital of The Netherlands, could receive BBC on their TV .
At that time this English broadcaster televised lots of darts. Therefore the people of Den Haag could watch the World Professional Championships (Embassy – now Lakeside). They got caught by the game and pretty soon the first serious darts league was established in that city.
Not long after that the rest of The Netherlands followed this example and six years later, in 1976, The “Nederlandse Darts Bond” (Dutch Darts Organization) was founded. This organization grew to be a nationwide organization, with branches throughout The Netherlands. As a result of this, in July 1989 the “Nederlandse Darts Federatie” (Dutch Darts Federation) was founded, following the wish and request of all branches of NDB. A close cooperation with the Ministry of WVC was established which enabled the local branches to be able to join as independent darts organizations. In 2004 for several reasons it was decided to change the name back to “Nederlandse Darts Bond” (Dutch Darts Organization).
